I agree that the outfits should reflect the period in which the girl is supposed to live.
That said, many girls are not purists as we are, and they would love to get these outfits for their dolls.
My daughter is into step dance, and I brought her to the Radio City to see Riverdance. Her Nellie wore a handmade (no, not by me... I am hopelss!) dance outfit. She got tons of compliments at the theater, and when we (surprise!) ended up at AGPNY, only 3 blocks away, everybody had something to say about the dress and the doll... boy, was DD proud!
Then again, don't call them historical!
